Gaelic games on rise for those with no Irish ties

REPORTER, EDITOR → The sport of Gaelic football has been played in Ireland since the late 19th century. But it's becoming increasingly popular here in the southeast.

It's not for the faint-hearted, though. To score, teams can kick or punch the ball into the goal, earning three points, or they can fire it between the two posts over the crossbar for one point. Players can use both their hands and their feet, but they have to bounce the ball every four steps or drop it and kick it back into their hands.

One team who've really got the hang of it in Sussex are the Brighton & Crawley Gaels and they've attracted all kinds of players. Josh McLaughlin reports.

Programme: South East Today (13:30 and 18:30 news bulletins), BBC One.
First broadcast date: 29 May 2025.
